Ignited Minds

Ignited Minds:Unleashing the Power Within India

This is a book written by our honorable President Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. Ignited Minds is all about his vision for India in 2020. This book consists of many inspirational messages by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. He wrote many books which inspired young Minds.

This book was dedicated to the school child name Snehal. Once Dr. Kalam asked a question to the children that 'who is our enemy?' and out of many children Snehal's answer was different, as she said 'our enemy is poverty'
Out of many chapters from this book I like 3rd chapter the most which was about "Visionary Teachers and Scientists". This chapter tells us that 'Vision Ignites the minds' and he also talked about modern Visionary like J.R.D. Tata., Dr. Verghese, Vikram Sarabhai and many more.

Pride and prejudice

Allow me to share about one of my favorites-Pride and prejudice by Jane Austen. This story follows the ife of a woman in the 19th century going through various events in her 20s. It also focuses on her love-hate relationship which later, after clarifications brings them together.
But more than the romance, the pride and the prejudice, the one thing that I like the most is the apt portrayal of dealing with families and handling them whilst also protecting them from criticism. The point that families cannot be chosen is very explicit.
The social situations are also very relatable. Considering the age this novel was, Elizabeth (protagonist) was written as a very strong character and an even stronger will who didn't fret about being unmarried her own life but rather stuck with her principles of marrying for love.

The immortals of MEHLUA

"Yes, a duality that is one of many perspectives of the universe-- the masculine and the feminine. The Asuras and the Suryavanshis represent the masculine/. The Devas and Chandravanshis speak for the feminine. The names change, but the life forces they embody remain the same. They will always exist. Neither can be ever destroyed. Otherwise the universe will implode." "And they see their fight with the other as the eternal struggle between good and evil."
This is a conversation between Lord Shiv and a Pandit who meets him at a temple. It means that world is comprised of both positive and negative energies. A person encounters both the energies, the way one deals with both the phases sets their future path or molds one's personality. None of them is good or bad; we need both of them in appropriate amounts in order to function in this world.

This is taken from a book that I recently read, 'The immortals of Meluha' by Amish Tripathi. It's an amazing book that drives you back to the world you might believe existed, just like your great great great grandparents. I mean one may not have seen them physically but you are bound to believe that they existed. Amish Tripathi is a renowned writer and this is his first book of Shiva Triology. He has written a this novel imagining or as I said believing that what if Lord Shiva was a human like any one of us, how would he live his life, all about his principles, personality, family, friends and his people. The book has many contexts which are so relatable to our lives now and answers questions which not many of them get answers of.
My father being a spiritual person, we have been brought up hearing lot of stories of Gods and other powerful human beings. His stories talk about a person facing some problem and then talking about different ways of dealing with the problems; thereby bringing in a reform in that person's life. Since, then I was explained, one has to face certain problems (which one thinks as evil) and then later with you abilities and with support of others, you resolve it (which one feels good about). Similarly, the law of duality is innate to mankind which has been very well explained in this book.
I read very few books and to me this is the ultimate book I have read till now. I am looking forward to read other parts and book written by Amish. Lastly, I would like to say that an author's book is worth of putting all the efforts, is when the reader feels part of the words written in those pages. In this book, I could feel, relate and be there throughout the story and hence, this book has done justice to all the efforts put in by the author, to me at least.

Till the Last Breath

We, human beings sometimes do not value the things we have. Also, we have forgotten that what it means to be alive. “Till the Last Breath” by Durjoy Datta is one such heart warming story about love, life and friendship that reminded me what it means to be alive!
The story was about the death sentences of the patients in Room No. 509. One of the patient was a brilliant nineteen year old medical student, who was suffering from an incurable, fatal disease pushing her towards a slow, painful death. She counts every extra breath as a blessing. On the other side, there was a wasteful twenty five year old drug addict whose every organ system is slowly shutting down. He can’t wait to get rid of his body. To him, it was like, the sooner the better! Putting their medical licenses at risk, two reputed doctors try everything to keep these two patients alive.
The thing I personally loved the most about this book was how their last days in the hospital change both the patients, their doctors and others around them in ways they had never fathomed.

The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho

I equate reading with a spiritual activity. The magic of the written word transforms an individual into a completely different world. Apart from this , books also inspire us to be better human beings. It opens up our minds and help us streamline our thoughts. One such book which has helped me is -The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

One of my dear friends gifted the copy of the famous book . I am ver thankful to her till this day. Many a life's lessons are taught in this book. The story of Santiago, a Shepard boy who was on a journey to realise his dream; his personal legend, has been nothing short of being an inspiring master piece. One of the powerful messages that the book spreads is to rise above failures, the unity of the university to help realise our dreams. The book also talks about believing in our destiny; belief in self and to rise above all hurdles or challenges in life. There is also a larger plan that life has to offer to us.

Many a times in life we find ourselves in such situations , a book like The Alchemist helps in strengthening our own hope. The narrative of the book is also quite an interesting read. The language is simple and manages to strike a cards with the reader. I would highly recommend the book for the power of positivity it offers to the readers.

The Edible Women by Margaret Atwood

The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood
Margaret Atwood’s writings help us understand the basic human desires, which are far away from the violence, or specifically physical violence, her works rather focus on the impact of causal behaviour on the lives of the people. This is a novel based on the life of a lady named Marian who is about to get married. At the same time she starts to realize a void, it takes a while for her to recognize the reasons for it, she starts looking for the reasons about her conditioning towards certain types behaviour and then making decisions which suite the best for her.
Marian is an employee in a market research company. She is getting ready to marry her fiance, Peter. He hardly ever considers her opinion, but this aspect is shown in quite a subtle manner which makes it difficult to recognize something odd happening. Peter wants to marry Marian because she is sensible of the women he knows, he himself seems to not be aware of the actions he does to Marian, those are just the indirect projection of his inner accepted ideals, he is interested in Marian because he believes that she doesn't has her opinion of her own and won't try to take over his life, as she would easily believe in what he believes.
This is seen when Peter often placed a plate on the bare back of Marian, restricting her from moving which signifies the way she is always tied softly and restricting her to a larger extent, it also signifies the acceptability and readiness she shows to stay obliged towards Peter’s actions. There comes a point in Marian’s life where she starts behaving oddly, and without realising it one day on a dinner date with Peter, she runs away without informing him, he chases her with his car and takes her to her apartment, he tries to find out the problem with her, but he gets no response. The narration in this section of the book is in the third person perspective thus, we don’t get to know the reasons for Marian’s change in behaviour.  A couple of similar events happen where she tries to physically run away. Later on, when with dinner with Peter, she looks at the way he handles food and the perfect manner in which he cuts the streak with knife and savers it with the fork, from that day she loses her interest to relish on any type of meat and eventually as the novel progresses she loses her interest to eat any type of food. This resorts to the idea of cannibalism where she feels that Peter will eventually devour her. During this time she developes a friendship with a person named Duncan, she tries to reveal her feelings about her life without expecting him to understand her. There are several other characters in this novel such as the office virgins, who seem perfectly engrossed in hunting for husbands, while Clara who is depicted as a friend of Marian seems to have achieved all the so called necessary things but, she is seldom happy and finds emptiness and has nothing left of herself apart from her husband and three children, while her own self has completely disappeared. Atwood has painted contrasting personalities through the characters of Clara and the office virgins and tried to show the plight of women in every possible situation, the office virgins are desperately waiting for their future husbands but what are they waiting for is the plight and emptiness faced by Clara. Ainsley who is a roommate to Mariam, is portrayed opposite to the other women characters, she exploits a male for her desires, this focuses on the attitude of a modern woman and the way eventually the terminology of ‘Feminism’ being misused.
Later, in the novel marian gets pale and weak because of the many number of days of going without food, in the end she breaks up her engagement with Peter and bakes a cake with the shape of a lady and offers it to Peter to make him realize where the problem lied, and then devours on it. Eating here is a metaphor for power, it means power and not powerlessness. Body is metaphor for food. And Marian tried to protest against the system which victimised her by not eating, which means that she tried to alienate herself from her physical body, as body becomes the site of subjection for women.
The novel showcases the view of the world where Marian leaves a perfectly comfortable life with an amazing partner, but for her it is a realization of getting into something she never wanted to actually happen. While reading the novel one feels that she might get into a relationship with Duncan and that might be the compensation for her break up with Peter, but in the end she stays single, because there is no happy ending happening without some eloping. We are not used to see an ending which is happy and there are no couples, especially if it is a woman who lives alone.
Atwood depicts women who is preserved in as narcissistic while the entire marriage market considers majorly the beauty of the women which is highly priced and rewarded. In a patriarchal society if any women looks into a mirror and finds herself beautiful, without seconding any opinion from masculine life, is dangerous, because she has used her own thoughts, and her own beliefs, and hence, she has to be punished or corrected.
This novel focuses on the fact that even though women are perceived to be independent and working and managing their lives on their own, the patriarchy has not ended the nature of exploitation it has just evolved, the nature of the term injustice has changed but the consequences are the same, what has changed is the way women protest against all the odds. People, and even women themselves consider marriage to be an ultimate goal. Atwood, through this novel has focused on the way women do eventually realize the void and rebel their way out of it.

“The Notebook” by Nicholas Spark

There are various books that I have read from classic to mystery to romance. Books to me are like friends that we get connected to, share secrets and like to spend time with. From all the books that I have read my all-time favorite book is “The Notebook” by Nicholas Spark.
Have you imagine how long you can love an individual? Is “love you forever” just a statement or a promise? In “the notebook” Nicholas spark tells us a story about true love. Love that last even after getting separated for many years. Love that only keeps on growing and getting stronger with the passing years.
“The notebook” is a story about two elderly people that live in an aged home. The male character is named Noah and the female character is known as Allie. Allie was a patient who was suffering from Alzheimer’s, she used to forget very often. Every day was a new and fresh page to Allie as she never remembered about the day before. But for Noah it was just another day to read the same old story from his diary that he had been reading for months and years to Allie.  Allie would always forget the story Noah read to her in the day by night.
The story that Noah read daily to Allie was about two teenagers who meet each other through a common friend. The girl was from a rich family and the boy was from a poor family. Because both the teenagers were from the same friend circle, they started meeting regularly. This regular meetings brought the rich girl and the poor boy closer and closer which lead them to fall in love with one another. When the family of the rich girl got to know about her relationship with the poor boy they told her to breakup with him, which made the girl upset. According to the rich girl money has no value when compared of love. But according to the girl’s mother money is more important than love, as you need money to survive not love. Later on the girl’s dad got a transfer and she had to leave the small town and move to a big city. This lead to a harsh heartbreak between the rich girl and the poor boy.
Few years later the girl grew up as a popular city girl with new friends. She was engaged and would be married in few months. Whereas the small town poor boy had joined the army and had returned from a war. The boy had a house that he build by himself after returning from the war. He posted an advertisement about the house in the newspaper so he could sell that house an earn for his living. Even though both were separated for years, still the love they had for each other would not let them forget the other person.
One day when the girl was shopping for her wedding she saw the advertisement about the house sale, she recognized it as the same house the poor boy wanted to build. The next day she went to the same small town where she had fallen in love in her teenage years. When she parked the car in front of the house the boy wanted to sell, he was shocked to see her. But they both could feel the love which they still had for each other. This meeting was awkward at the beginning but later they fought and expressed that they still loved each other. This brought them closer and they come to a decision that this time they would listen to their heart and live together for the rest of their life.
This was the love story that Noah would read out to Allie every day. The story that Noah always read to Allie was actually about the two of them. The rich girl was Allie and the poor boy was Noah. After Noah and Allie had decided to stay together they got married and had children. They realized that even though they were not rich they survived. They worked in the small town supported each other, supported their children and their love grew stronger day after day. When they both grew old Allie suffered from Alzheimer’s so she and Noah converted the house which Noah had built into an old age home. Here even though Allie never remembered Noah. He read their own love story to her on a daily. He believed that one day Allie would remember who he was and the love that she had for him would never die. Even though her brain could never recognized him, her heart would never forget who he was to her.
This story is my favorite because it proves that there is true love, you just need the right person to be your companion. The right person will always stay with you through your good and bad days. They will always be your support and be by your side till the end.

Many Lives, Many Masters - Dr. Brian Weiss

Many Lives Many Masters is a true story of a psychiatrist and a patient, and a past-life therapy that changed both their lives. Dr. Brian Weiss, M.D., graduated from Columbia University and Yale Medical school, he spent years practicing study of Human Psychology. Dr. Weiss was conservative in his profession and did not trust anything that could not be proved by traditional science.

In 1980 he met a 27 year old patient, Catherine who was troubled by anxiety, panic attacks and phobias, came to his office for therapy. Dr. Weiss was taken aback during the therapy sessions and he stopped his conservative psychiatric thinking as he discovered the concept of reincarnation and many beliefs of Hinduism.

Dr. Weiss used common methods of treatment to help Catherine overcome her traumas for 18 months. When nothing worked, he tried hypnosis which he says is an excellent tool to help patient remember long forgotten memories. Basically hypnosis is a state of focused concentration causing the memory to sharpen and remember long forgotten memories. During the earlier sessions, he hypnotized Catherine back to her childhood, she recalled drowning in a pool and being abused by her alcoholic father. But what came next made skeptics like Dr. Weiss to believe into the transcendental world.

Catherine recalled her ‘past life’ memories that proved to be the cause of her anxiety and panic attacks. She remembered living 86 times in physical states in different places both as male and female. She clearly recalled the details of each birth, her name, her family, her physical appearance, places and how she died in each life. In each lifetime she experienced innumerable events making progress and fulfilling all the karmic debts owed to her. Dr. Weiss’s skepticism further diminished when she began to channel messages from the many Masters who are highest souls not presently in body. She also made remarkable revelations about his family and his dead son that Catherine could not possibly have known.

Patients often talked about their near – death experiences in which they floated out of their bodies towards a bright white light before they return to their bodies again. But Catherine revealed much more, as she floated out of her body after each death, she said that she was aware of a bright light which gave positive energy. Then while waiting to be born again in next life she got to learn wisdom from the Masters and became a channel for transcendental world. Finally, Dr. Weiss believed that Catherine was able to focus on the part of her subconscious mind that stored past – life memories due to hypnosis, eventually this therapy also helped to overcome her phobias, panic attacks and anxiety.

Many Lives Many Masters is an incredible book by Dr. Brian Weiss. His and Catherine’s experiences about past lives are truly fascinating, and no matter how skeptic you are about reincarnation, the lessons by Masters about how to live are universal. In the end it all comes down to Love, Patience and Peace.

The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale

The Power of Positive Thinking is a book that shows you that the roots of success lie in the mind and teaches you how to believe in yourself by breaking the habit of worrying and taking control of your life by controlling your thoughts and changing your attitude. It is all about how being optimistic and finding the power to achieve your goals will help one be a successful and happy individual.  It is believed that there are several elements that go into being successful such as talent, work ethic, education, family background, desires, motivation, opportunity, and luck. But this book intends to disregard many of these components of success and says it is mainly faith in yourself and God. And that is why thinking positive with the correct habits will create everlasting success, which usually correlates with happiness.

So have faith in your abilities and partner with a power higher than yourself to achieve your goals. This book is considered to be a great help to individuals who are haunted with living in an inferiority complex and have lost faith in themselves.  The only matter of concern is to restore the lost faith. Good thoughts do attract success and happiness; this is one of the major focuses in this book. I personally like this book as it gives all possible tips on how to think positively even through the most difficult times and have faith in oneself.

This adventurous novel tells about an extra ordinary journey of an ordinary village boy Shankar to Africa. It was in 1909, five years before World War I. Shankar, a middle class Bengali village boy, just passed out from college, expected from his family to be employed and took all household responsibilities. But Shankar’s feisty athletic mind was full of wanderlust. Instead of doing monotonous job in jute mill, Shankar grabbed the opportunity of a station master job in Africa which was brought by one of his neighbour.

At first, Shankar got a job with a company laying railway tracks from Mombasa to Kisumu. Starting his job as a clerk and storekeeper, very soon he transferred to another place, named Uganda. Here, he worked as a Station Master. As Africa is well known for its wild inhabitant, Shankar also faced several animal attacks. At first, he was attacked by man eater lion, followed by venomous snake like ‘Black Mamba’. But, still he never lost his hope from continuing work in Uganda.

Shankar became more influenced when he met wounded Portuguese traveler Diego Alverez.  Shankar saved his life. Then Alvarez explained that his exploits in Africa with his friend Jim Carter and also gave details how they were attracted by the priceless yellow diamond and searched for these yellow diamond caves on the Mountain of the Moon in the Richter veldt. There, it was rumored that the diamond cave was protected by a diabolical creature, called Bunyip and unfortunately Carter was supposedly killed by bunyip.

The breathing, freshening, menacing picture of the jungle and the flora and fauna with the human existence including the volcanic eruption made the whole journey more adventurous.

Shankar got inspired by Alvarez and resigned his job and gave company with Alvarez for exploring the mine. But the journey was not so easy. Both of them were attacked by the devilish creature bunyip. Although, Shankar was saved but Diego lost his life. Even, after losing Diego, Shankar’s journey remained unabated. At last, he discovered the diamond cave and found the remaining part of Italian explorer  Attilio Gatti.

At the time of returning, Shankar became lost in the desert of Kalahari and almost died of thirst. Fortunately, he was rescued by an African survey team and was taken to a hospital in Rhodesia. Before returning to home, he wrote his journey in a newspaper and earned money and he promised to come back again.

Why did the Bakula fall? : What “Gently Falls the Bakula” by Sudha Murthy means to me

by Arundhati Kamat

As a voracious reader, I was introduced to Sudha Murthy when I was a child. As I grew up and began to appreciate her simple yet powerful writing style, I chanced across one of her novels titled “Gently Falls the Bakula”. Intrigued by the title and the cover description, I started reading it.

“Gently Falls the Bakula” is a story that seems, at first, a beautiful simple story of two individuals. We are introduced to the primary characters Shrimati and Shrikant- both brilliant and bright young minds hailing from rival families. As they fall in love and marry against all the odds stacked against them, Sudha Murthy not only highlights their personal struggles but all the constraints that our society deliberately as well as unknowingly puts on us. Both characters are open-minded, sensitive and brave- even as they face the prospect of never being able to have kids, they decide to forego convention and live by themselves. Shrikant races ahead in his career and becomes a successful young executive; his homely and efficient wife gives up all her dreams and passions to provide for the comfort and efficiency of her home and her Shri- both of which are the center of her universe. But as he is catapulted to higher achievements; Shrimati, under the animosity of her conservative mother-in-law and depressed by her loneliness, becomes a mere shadow of the vivid and intelligent girl that she once had been. A meeting with her old mentor reminds Shrimati of her waning significance in Shrikant’s life and the passion for learning that never quite left her. In what can be described as one of the most poignant moments in the plot, she leaves her Shri and follows her dreams. Yet the farewell itself is not a big and theatrical exit. She gently explains to Shrikant what their marriage of ten years had been reduced to, and promises to be his friend and companion. As she leaves, Shrikant, deflated by the loss of his wife and best friend, feels dejected, but it is only momentary- as a call from work interrupts his thoughts, he is pulled back into the corporate world that he has come to call home.

I read this book when I was in my early teen years and it had a profound impact on me. But my initial readings often left me confused. In my daily life, I had never seen or known of a story like this. If she was unhappy, I wondered, why did they not simply separate? And how was the title significant? As I started growing up, I was slowly able to uncover each layer that Sudha Murthy’s seemingly simple novel, written years ago, had created.

Shrimati is an embodiment of all the virtues that an Indian woman must possess. She reminds me of Valmiki’s Sita- bright and independent yet with great love and devotion for her personal relationships. But this Sita does not have a dramatic exit when she reflects on her diminished dignity; she chooses to simply exit and greater importance to her self-respect and her dreams. Shrimati is a woman held back by no convention, no bondage, and no rigidity. She is an independent and sensitive thinker, and she inspired in my mind an ideal individual who must give of herself but know where to resume command. Even today, this story is real life for many relationships- we see women and men, both, giving up professional dreams for their family life, but without the ability to strike a balance between the two, creating negativity. The novel’s undercurrents are also very thought-provoking- the social pressure to follow conventions, the importance, or its lack, given to Shrimati’s knowledge of an “inferior” subject like History, the importance of having an open mind and the many roles that individuals, especially women, assume in the family.

I read this book very often, and with every read, enjoy its new revelations. And as my understanding of the book gains depth, the title makes greater sense to me. The “Bakula”, a symbol of Shrikant and Shrimati’s love, depicts how each relationship passes through different phases, and to catch the Bakula as it falls and preserve its long-lasting fragrance is up to the individual.
